The Vagabond Lodge was established in 1954 by the Cranmer family, and was built on the west end of Hood River, Oregon.

The hotel came to be after Lucy saw a picture in The Sacramento Evening Post in 1951 of children playing in the Hood River Valley apple orchards with Mt Hood in the background. 111

She thought that if such a beautiful place existed, she would like to live there.  With that, she and Clarence moved from Helena, MT to Hood River and built the Vagabond Lodge with a total of 6 rooms (they lived in the west end, raising the kids).  To make ends meet, Clarence worked at the old saw mill.  Lucy and Clarence established the Vagabond to share the natural beauty of the gorge with guests, guests that became friends, friends that became family.  That spirit continues today.

The family still owns and operates the Lodge, currently in the third generation, and has added several buildings to share the area with guests.  The grounds now include five buildings, nestled on five plus acres of quiet, wooded grounds situated on the cliffs overlooking the Columbia River, with most rooms having stunning views of the gorge.  The courtyard is filled with native trees and wildflowers, many planted by the family.  There are also picnic areas, open grass areas, a very small orchard, and a playground.

Please feel free to stop by the office anytime, if you are staying with us or not.  Lucy loved greeting everyone who walked through her door; many of them wrangled into an evening of Scrabble and a lifetime of friendship.  Lucy’s son, Jerry, would greet guests by sharing his cat’s tricks with anyone who didn’t mind the very cheesy humor, and the same friendship Lucy offered.  We continue to enjoy sharing the area with guests, as do the Bald Eagles that float by on the famous Gorge winds.
