Our Story

"The Vagabond Lodge was established in 1954 by my Grandparents, Lucy and Clarence Cranmer. The hotel came to be after Lucy came across an edition of the Sacramento Evening Post in the spring of 1951. The cover featured children playing in the Hood River Valley apple orchards with Mount Hood in the background. She thought that if such a beautiful place existed, she would like to live there. She and Clarence immediately packed up their family and moved from Helena Montana. They built the Vagabond on the cliffs of the Columbia River just outside of Hood River. With a total of 6 rooms, raising their children in the west end.

Lucy and Clarence established the Vagabond to share the natural beauty of the gorge with guests. Guests that became friends, friends that became family. That spirit continues today.

I'm the third generation of family owners and work at the Lodge daily. Over the years we have added over 50 rooms to the lodge, most closer to the river and the breathtaking views. And we just completed our event site and amphitheater, guaranteeing many more happy memories to come. Thank you for your continued patronage and friendship." - Grant Polson
